Ernest Hurrell was born in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St Edmunds Q3-1887 4A:694) son of Ephraim and Eliza HURRELL(née BRIDEWELL).
1891 census...Aged 3, he was at the Lion Inn, High Street, Icklingham with his father Ephraim HURRELL [47] manager of Icklingham Brewery, born Lawshall; his mother Eliza [29] born Devizes; brothers James E [7] and Arthur [5] both born in Devizes and Asher [2] born Icklingham. 1901 census...Aged 13, he was at High Street, Icklingham with his parents (father now foreman on road); brothers Arthur (post boy), Asher and Victor [3]; sisters Daisy [9],Lily [7], Beatrice [5] and Amelia [1]. The new siblings were all born in Icklingham. 1911 census...Aged 23, single, road labourer, he was at 30 West Street, Icklingham with his parents, brother Victor Albert and sisters Amelia and Violet Isabella [9] born Icklingham. One of the ten children had died. |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. On the 16th September the battalion were halted just north of VAILLY. The 2nd Cavalry Brigade were on their right and completed the link up with4th Brigade of the 2nd Division to the East. The enemy were seen entrenching a position 200 yards to their NE in front of positions held by 4th Brigade. Guard on their right then pushed forward a patrol to draw enemy fire from POLEMPRISE FARM. They were still in the same positions for the rest of the week. CWGC show 14 of the battalion killed on the 16th, all are commemorated on the La Ferte sous Jouarre Memorial
